RezNet Bandwidth Guidelines

RezNet subscribers can now enjoy access to the wired and wireless services in residence with no daily or monthly bandwidth limits. Please note that the primary purpose of the RezNet network service is to support the academic mission of the University.

To ensure equal access for all RezNet users, we do reserve the right to request that users monopolizing the network resources, reduce their usage. In order to preserve the integrity of the network, RezNet also reserves the right to modify our bandwidth limits policy.

What is Bandwidth?

Bandwidth is a measurement of the amount of data transmitted over a network. When you browse the web, open your email, download or send a file, or do anything using RezNet, data is transported back and forth between your machine and the network. The amount of data for any of these activities determines the amount of bandwidth being used. The greater the network load, the more network performance may suffer.

Think of the network wires as a communication pipeline. Data flows quickly and smoothly when the amount of traffic traveling in the pipe is small relative to the size of the pipe. When the amount of traffic exceeds the capacity of the pipe, the speed at which data travels begins to drop. File sharing, VoIP, and video streaming applications can cause increased traffic and as a result will use up quite a bit of bandwidth.
